One of the major blackjack secrets is the method of counting cards. Now in the most basic method of counting cards there is what is called the +1 and -1 system of counting cards. This is a system that is so easy most people are amazed that it even works. It works by assigning a count value to each card; these numbers are plus one for 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s and minus one for all 10 value cards. Every other card in the deck gets assigned a zero value. So for example, if four 3’s and two 10’s have been played then your count is currently at +2 (this is called the running count).

Now you have the basic counting strategy down but your not sure what it all means, well the next step is to explain what this count tells you. This so-called blackjack secret is meant for the player to keep track of how many 10-value cards there are left in the deck. Which is why it is plus one every time a 3-6 card is played because that means there are more and more 10 value cards left in the deck and you have a better chance at getting blackjack or other high hand.

These aren’t the only blackjack secrets though; now casinos play with more than one deck so a +2 running count really wouldn’t be all that great now would it? This is why the next weapon in your arsenal is to take what the running count is and divide it by the number of decks that are in the shoe (this is called the true count). For example, if you are playing at a 4 deck table and your running count is at +4, the true count is actually a +1 so you are going to want to wait until the running count reaches a +8 before you increase your bet.

Composition-dependent black jack strategy for twelve against 4 requires you to specify how you get to twelve: Do you have 7-5, 8-4, 3-2-2-5, or what? If you get to twelve by 10-2 or 2-10 (where 10 means any 10-count card), and two or fewer decks are being used (or seven or fewer if the dealer stands on soft seventeen), you should hit. If you get to twelve by any other route, or enough decks are being used, you should stand.

There are few differences between composition-dependent and total-dependent black jack strategies for single deck, and none that are important for multiple decks.
Pairs
If you split a pair and catch another card of the same value, resplit if you can. If it is correct to split a pair, it is correct to resplit.
You may or may not be allowed to double down after splitting a pair. For example, if you split 8-8 and catch a 3 for eleven, you may or may not be allowed to double down on that eleven. If doubling down after splitting is allowed, then splitting is more attractive and you should split more often and use you bonus chance.

Surrender
Surrender means losing half a bet for the privilege of not playing out the hand. Late surrender means you cannot surrender if the dealer has a natural. The table of generic basic strategy includes strategy for late surrender. Most of the value of late surrender comes from surrendering sixteen against 10. Late surrender is worth 0.1% to a basic-strategy player.
If you are playing blackjack at a casino that does not offer surrender, or if you are not allowed to surrender due to having more than two cards, then hit those hands for which surrender is advisable.

Insurance
Basic strategy says never take insurance. Even if you have a natural, you are better off not insuring it. You are better off winning 3:2 most of the time than winning even money for sure.

Of course, that changes if you’re counting cards, but we’re only discussing basic strategy here. You also want to start with enough money so that you can play 20x your bet. For example, if you’re betting $10.00 a hand, make sure you have at least a $200 budget. This will allow you to play like a robot and reduce your chances of making emotional decisions.

Where you sit is also important in blackjack. Don’t sit at first base (first spot at the table, first person to place a bet). This can lead to poor decision making because of the pressure to act quickly and accurately. If you’re confident in your abilities, sit at third base (last spot at the table, last to act). As Christmas was fast approaching, my boss at work decided to take myself (I am a service engineer) and the rest of his team out to dinner. There was around thirty of us in total and as we started to enjoy our meal, it wasn’t long before the drinks started flowing. I really don’t know how much I had to drink, all I can say is I had a good time…hic…

Inevitably and all too soon, it was time to go home. Or was it? No of course not. The night was still young at 1.am in the morning and everyone was in high spirits or just plain drunk. Many of my colleagues decided to go clubbing, but a colleague and I with whom I was sharing a cab, decided to get back to our home town and visit the local Casino. I hadn’t been in a Casino in the UK for many years, so I was definitely up for it.

The cab journey took around fourty minutes, which gave me time enough to what some would say “sober up” but in reality I was at least able to get my head together. On arival at the Casino I had to register, not having been there before. My colleague started out by playing Roulette changing around £20 into chips for the privelage. I in the meantime, was observing both him and others around on the slots. It wasn’t long before my colleague had lost his £20 and was changing more money into chips, but then he moved onto black jack. I on the other hand did not feel comfortable with the tables and so continued to watch him as well as keeping an eye on one particular slot on which another punter was feeding without any return.

It wasn’t long before the guy on the slot I had been watching got up and walked away empty handed. As I had been keeping an eye on that particular slot, I knew he had fed quite a bit into it. I checked the loose change in my pocket and found £6.00. You guessed it, I started playing on the slot in question. I didn’t know this machine at all being new here, so only played a minimum bet. Within just a few minutes, I had won £50. I cashed out from the machine and started watching my colleague again who by now was according to him, breaking even.  This news made me feel a lot more comfortable as I didn’t like the idea of me winning and him losing.

I still wasn’t comfortable with the tables, so moved on to another slot I had been watching and again, won and cashed out. At this point I noticed my colleague drawing money from a cash machine using his credit card. He had lost quite a bit and was now chasing his losses. I was tempted to drag him out, but instead just commented offering advice which needless to say, given that he was still influenced by alchohol, was declined.

I returned to the first slot I had been on and won again and so again cashing out. Heavily laden with coins I decided to change them for notes and call it a day. I was well up on my £6.00 which gave me a return of £140. I was happy but at the same time concerned for my colleague.

I continued to watch as my colleague chased his losses and eventually quit. It was time to get a cab home which incidentally I had to pay for as he had no money left. On my way home, I wondered if I had had more to drink, would I have raided the cash machine?

So the moral of this story, is don’t gamble when intoxicated and don’t chase losses. Quit while you are ahead as the longer you play your good luck is sure to run out. By observing others when playing slots, you can sometimes, but not always win.
